Animax Presents Video Game Awards (VGA) 2010!

One of the most popular thing in this world is video game. Ever since I was little, I played video games like Pacman and Super Mario, in playstations and computer. Now, in our present age, we can say these video games really evolved in a short pace of time, since the technology is rapidly growing and advancing. We can see the proof in every game that is being launched yearly. Since it is also said that these are bigger than the movie industry, a recognition, just like the Oscars where all the actors, actresses, director, producer and the staffs gathered, has been created to recognize the best of the best. It was aired last December 11, 2010 at SpikeTV.

And so, game enthusiasts, I now cordially present to you the Video Game Awards 2010!

The program started with a very catchy and elegant-looking performance of dancing men in white. As they thrilled and excited the audience, the host of the night appeared, Mr. Neil Patrick Harris. He looked arrogant (though it’s just part of the show, of course) yet very cool and handsome. He had brought the first category of VGA: Game of the Year.

              Nominees included:
              - Call of Duty: Black Ops
              - God of War III
              - Halo: Reach
              - Mass Effect 2
              - Red Dead Redemption

The second category was Best Studio of the Year. The studio is the collection of artists, programmers, writers and technicians who are very responsible and are the behind-the-scenes in every game. They are committed to bring us the latest trend in gaming industry, out of their passion for these.

                Nominees are:
                - Bioware
                - Blizzard Entertainment
                - Bungle Studio
                - Rockstar San Diego
The award goes to… Bioware!

Third category was Character of the Year. Nominees were:
                - Ezio from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
                - Kratos from God of War 3
                - John Marston from Red Dead Redemption
                - Sgt. Frank Woods from Call of Duty: Black Ops
The award goes to… Sgt. Frank Woods from Call of Duty: Black Ops!

Fourth category was Best Action Adventure Game. Nominees were:
                   - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
                   - God of War 3
                   - Red Dead Redemption
                   - Super Mario Galaxy 3
Award goes to … Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood! (But I was rooting for Super Mario because it’s my all-time favorite game :)) )

Fifth category was Best Shooter Award. Nominees were:

                    - Battlefield: Bad Company 2
                    - BioShock 2
                    - Call of Duty: Black Ops
                    - Halo: Reach

Sixth category was Best Performance by a Human Male. Nominees were:
                    - Gary Oldman as Sgt. Reznov  (Call of Duty: Black Ops)
                    - John Cleese as Jasper (Fable III)
                    - Martin Sheen as Illusive Man (Mass Effect 2)
                    - Nathan Fillion as Sgt. Edward Buck (Halo: Reach)
                    - Neil Patrick Harris as Peter Parker/Amazing Spider-Man (Spider-Man:   Shattered Dimensions)
                   - Rob Wiethoft as John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)
                   - Sam Worthington as Alex Mason (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

Award goes to … Neil Patrick Harris as Peter Parker from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions!

Seventh Category was Best Independent Game of the Year. Nominees were:

                - Joe Danger
                - Limbo
                - Super Meat Boy
                - The Misadventure of P.B. Winterbottom
Award goes to … Limbo!

By the way, there was also “Most Anticipated Game” category and most of the nominees were in the World Premier – trailers of the upcoming games for 2011 - segment of the VGA. This is the portion I like!
              Nominees were:
             - Batman: Arkham City (to be released on Fall 2011)
             - BioShock: Infinite
             - Gears of War
             - Portal 2
The awards goes to... Portal 2!

Other World Premier games introduced were:

 - The Elder Scrolls V: SKYRIM to be released on 11.11.11, as announced by its maker, the Legendary Game Designer Todd Hower, who also worked on Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series.

- Mortal Kombat – only on PS3
- Thor, God of Thunder, with a catchphrase of “Legend tells of a hammer…”

- SSX Deadly Descents, a cool skateboarding-themed game
- inSANE, presented by the famous director Guillermo del Toro, and will be released on 2013
- Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, with a catchphrase of “Be careful of what of you wish for. It might just get into you.” Uncover the truth on 11.11.11

Other awards mentions were:

Best Driving Game - Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
Best Adapted Video Game - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Most Anticipated Game of 2011 - Portal 2 (Mentioned earlier)
Best RPG - Mass Effect 2
Best Music Game - Rock Band 3
Best Soundtrack - DJ Hero 2
Best Performance by a Human Female - Tricia Helfer as Sarah Kerrigan from StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

We’ll talk about now the surprised performances in the awards night, which some was still in line with the VGA categories presented.

My Chemical Romance electrifyingly performed live “Planetary GO!”  which will be the opening song for Gran Turismo 5. (*Get up & Go! Get up & Go! Oh, excuse me! I’ve had it as LSS…)

Well, another funny thing in VGA was after NPH’s win as Best Performance by Human Male. He talked to Spiderman and because the latter was talking non-stop, Neil told the staff to shut it. LOL. Neil also tried to play around with the chicken and pig before presenting inSANE by Dir. Guillermo del Toro. It was really hilarious because the animals in the stage were real and big plus the pigs were colored green.

A round-of-applause also for Jose Gonzales’ solo guitar performance, Far Away, a soundtrack from Red Dead Redemption. This got the award for Best Song in Game and Best Original Score!

There was also a violin performance from Halo: Reach by Diana Yukawa. To tell the truth, she really stunned me because it’s one of the dreams to play violin.

Yes, by the way, Neil also performed solo, playing the piano, Yamaba brand. (I also wanted to play piano.) Anyway, can you guess what he played? I mean, just a theme? He started seriously by saying somehow like this, “We can still remember them, the dead ones”. At first, I thought he was talking about the victims of calamities that had happened in the world for 2010, but as he started pressing the keys, a background video was shown and that was when I realized he referred to the not-so-important or the extras in all the video games who had died. Really, the audience too laughed over it! And I was… ROFL. He’s really funny!

Hmm… Deep breathes and smiles :)  Hope you guys had enjoyed this simple tour-like at the awards night.

What? You ask me something? Well, what’s that? Oh, yeah. I was really planning to conceal it at the end. The Game of the Year award belongs to… Red Dead Redemption! Woohoo! (*Poppers all around!)

Congratulations to all winners and nominees! All your efforts were paid-off worthily. Keep up the good work and bring us more breakthrough in gaming industry. Thank you for sharing with us your talent and passion! We’ll support you all the way.

P.S
Shall we say, THANK YOU, ANIMAX! for bringing us this most anticipated event of the year, Video Game Awards 2010!

Philippines Previous Anime and Cosplay Events 2010

This blog post covers the past anime and cosplay events from January to July 2010 that I, one of the Animax Youth Council (AYC), had attended and of course, enjoyed!

The first ever OTAKU EXPO was held last January 23-24 on Megatrade Hall, Megamall. This venue is no doubt the most popular one for all anime enthusiasts, otaku.

In this event was my first ever costume-play too! I used to attend anime conventions since 2007 but I was only on normal clothes then on 2009, I started cos-stripping. But this year was really my promise to myself to cosplay! The character I chose was Yanagi “Anna” Sakoshita from 烈火の炎 (Recca no Honoo)/ Flame of Recca (FoR).

This is me! :)
My companions: Franz and Hime

My two friends, (on the right) weren’t in costumes but they were supporting and cheering me up because I was very shy during the event.

Yet, whenever there was on-the-spot contest and I knew the answer, I rushed on the stage, grabbed the lend-out mic and speak up the answer, whether correct or not.

Ok, to those who want to know what kind of on-the-spot contest I am talking about here, I’ll try to explain it the normal way. The M.C.(s) will ask the crowd who are listening about the title of the anime song that the DJ will play and people who know the answer will rushed toward the stage and the M.C will choose who was the first who got in front.

As the time goes by, and so as to make the mechanics go smoothly and less rushed and harsh, people will just have to raise their hands and M.C.(s) and other event officers will look for the person who was the first one to raise up a hand. The prizes at first includes snacks and on the later part, Chikara Hats and the newly-published magazine MUSICASIA. The cover was ARASHI, my favourite boy group of all J-groups! I joined, of course, and answered the name of the artist and particular Jdrama of the music video on the screen. I got the magazine for free! On the MV game part, I knew the anime title so I went in front and got the last Chikara Hat! I was so happy!

Memorabilia~ ARASHI 4ever!

Other games included the OTAKU-HENYO (Otaku-style Pinoy Henyo). It is partner-game as it was really is. One of the partner will go stage and turn his back from the audience and guess the “anime title” of which the character on the screen is in, while the other one will answer him “Yes, No, Maybe” (Oo, Hindi, Pwede). There was also “Bring Me!”, Yakult Drinking Contest, Ramen Eating Contest and many more.

All events have the band performance, Battle of the Bands and of course the Cosplay Competition. If you are going to ask me if I joined the competition, no, I didn’t. ^^,

The next month, the 4th TAGCOM: Toy and Hobbies Collection was held on February 27-28 at Robinsons Midtown Mall Atrium Ermita, Manila. This is a yearly event and admission is free!

Here are some of the photos I have:

Yanagi and Recca finally met up for the first time! ♥♥

April 9-11 was Otaku Zine Festival, held again on Megatrade Hall. I went there on the third day together with my otaku friends – Franz, Hime, Aoi and Enma. I enjoyed the event, of course! Many are taking photos of cool cosplayers and us. ^^,

I cosplayed Mint Blancmanche of Galaxy Angels.
Some photos are on my facebook account.

June 19-20 ToyCon
I have written a blog about this exuberant event just few days after this. Feel free to click the link, read and comment on it.

July 24-25 I AI ANIME
This is the last anime convention I attended for the month of July. This is sponsored by Otakuzine, Yakult and many more. I went with Rochel and we had great time together in the event.

At first I didn’t like to wear my original and first costume but I still did. Ana Yanagi is back with a charm. Guess what? Before leaving the event, she met Recca again, for a very long time! (Last was on TagCom) Cool!

Left Recca Hanabishi cosplayer (Photo Courtesy of Nilo-san). Right Me and Rochel

Thank you! Please feel free to comment! I'll be waiting. ^^,
